Growth in the IDR team

July 8, 2024

Firstly, we hope you will join us in welcoming Catherine and Elspeth to the IDR Law team!

Last year, we received a £3.25m investment from the British Growth Fund. The deal has allowed us to focus on growth. A key part of this is to expand our teams across our Manchester and Harrogate offices.

Both offices are growing at speed with Catherine joining us in Manchester and Elspeth joining us in Harrogate this month.

To help you get to know our new starters better, we have shared some of their experiences below.

Meet Catherine:

Catherine took the traditional route into her legal career. She studied Law (LLB Hons) at Nottingham Trent University and then returned home to complete the Legal Practice Course at Manchester Metropolitan University.

She has extensive litigation experience, having specialised in litigation since qualifying as a Solicitor in 2004.

Catherine’s choice of litigation as her area of expertise is driven by her commitment to helping people in difficult situations. She is dedicated to finding the most effective and least stressful way of resolving a dispute. Her journey into law began at the sixth-form college she attended, which offered a Law A Level that she took and found to be a truly enjoyable experience.

Catherine came to IDR, having spent 9.5 years at her previous firm (Nicholson Jones Sutton), most recently in their Contentious Probate department. Her work consisted mainly of claims under the Inheritance (Provision for Family and Dependants) Act 1975 and disputed Will claims.

She found her way to IDR Law when the opportunity to work at a firm focused on contentious probate arose, which felt like an opportunity that was too good not to take.
Catherine enjoys spending time with family and friends outside of work, walking, swimming, and watching rugby league (not playing!).

Meet Elspeth:

Elspeth joined IDR Law as a solicitor after qualifying with Irwin Mitchell LLP. She joined Irwin Mitchell as a paralegal in their contentious probate department and quickly knew this was the area of law for me.

Elspeth qualified as a solicitor through CILEX, which allowed her to remain with the team during her training. She has over three years of contentious probate experience.

As the younger sister of an older brother, Elspeth has always wanted things to be fair. She would often spend her childhood arguing why something wasn’t fair between her and her brother. At this point, someone suggested a career in Law to Elspeth. After studying Law at A Level, she became hooked and knew this was the path for her.

When she heard about IDR Law, she was very intrigued by our work ethic and attitude. Our attitudes on how to work are not those of a traditional law firm, and this really sets us apart from competitors. After meeting Martin, Elspeth knew she wanted to join the firm and our team. In her words, “Everyone at IDR Law is wonderful and super helpful—it really is a great team!”

When she’s not in the office, her (very) lively cocker spaniel takes up most of my spare time, but when she’s not entertaining or walking Bonnie, she loves to go for a run or cycle in the countryside.
